Web animation makes a website come alive in every sense of the word. A static page quietly delivering information can become a highly compelling and winning experience with a well made Flash animation. It is also important that the viewer’s attention is captured without
distracting them from the essence of your website, or indeed, driving them away by being too overwhelming.
The
web shares many features with traditional media, yet is
unlike any of them. In the early days, the web was quite
like printed text (except with links) and websites were
constructed with that in mind. More recently, new technologies
for web animation are bringing features from TV and video
to the web.
Many
people see this as an evolution, and that once the technology
is available, the appearance of websites will be more and more like fully animated video...
This
is of course only partially true, as there are many advantages to using plain ordinary text. These advantages are in many cases the reason you are using the web as your medium in the first place. Video of course
works very well as entertainment, and especially for capturing and
holding a viewers attention. It is a favourite for advertising.
Animate verb (t): to give life to; make alive.
The
web is an entirely new medium
It
took 100 years after the invention of the printing press
for the layout of books (title page, contents page, headings,
page numbers, index, etc.) to become consistent. A similar
process is occurring right now for the web.
The process is complicated by the rapid rate of change
in what is possible on the web. And how many of these
possibilities have quite fundamental differences. For
example video moves forward at its own speed, but you
read the pages of a book at your own pace.
There
are many people now attempting to make fully animated
"websites of the future" using technologies
such as Adobe Flash for the entire site. There are
some problems with this though - such as the fact that search engines may not be able to index
or reference the text inside. Or that the pages inside
cannot be bookmarked, and the text itself can be blurry
and hard to read. We believe that in the future these
problems will be solved, paving the way for web animation
that is more fully integrated with the site.
A major problem with web animation on the internet today is
that many of the files are large and slow to download.
No matter how impressed you may be with it, nobody else
is going to be happy about waiting three minutes to download
a commercial for your product. However it is not always necessary for an
animation to be large and slow to download.
Of
course we can build you an all-Flash site if it would
be beneficial. People with specific needs (such as to
project an arty image) may consider the advantages outweigh the
disadvantages.
Therefore the decision as to how much web animation to use, if any, is a question of how to use animation to best deliver your
message to your audience.
